About the Sanctuary
Ngamba Island Chimpanzee sanctuary is currently home to 52 orphaned and confiscated chimps, rescued from the illegal pet and bush meat trade in all part of Uganda. Chimpanzees living at Ngamba have a safe and semi-natural environment in which to recover and eventually thrive over their normal life despite their initial trauma.
The island founded in 1998 and offers 95 acres of natural forest where the chimpanzees roam and forage daily and freely. However, their diet is supplemented per day since there is no enough food in the forest. Visiting tourists are able to observe the feeding from a viewing platform and this offers an experience of primates in a natural habitats. The chimps also have the freedom to stay in the forest at night or return to nighttime enclosures where they can build nests and receive an evening meal.
Chimpanzees at Ngamba Island cared for by dedicated staff and it is a daily commitment by caregivers, veterinarians, volunteers and island staff. This is the only place you can visit for hands on experience in feeding and caring for the 52 chimpanzees presently on the island. Currently, the Chimpanzee Trust under Uganda Wildlife authority is working with other organizations on education, conservation and awareness programs to try and reduce the frequency of chimpanzees being pulled from the wild.
Activities at Ngamba island Chimpanzee sanctuary
The major activity at the island is chimpanzee viewing and feeding. Visitors can also do, bird watching, experiencing other wildlife encounters, swimming on the equator and cultural encounter by visiting a neighboring fishing village. Simply sunbathing and relaxing on the shore of Lake Victoria is another activity at Ngamba.
Visitors can also participate in feeding their favorite chimpanzees from the platform and watch as the chimps excitedly try and gain your attention to receive food. While on the island, you will also have a chance to sight monitor lizards, birds, and have photographic opportunities.
How much is to visit Ngamba Island?
You can take a speed boat at around $ 350 which includes returning trip and entry fees to view chimpanzees. The journey takes about 90 minutes and depends on the weather of the day since it is water transport.
