Best Time To Visit – Kenya “June to October is an excellent time for Kenya tours. During these months, the weather is generally dry (although it can get really hot in October and at the tail end of September) and most trails are open. This also coincides with the wildebeest and zebra migration in the Masai Mara National Reserve. This is the Dry season, and as it progresses, water sources for animals tend to dry up and become fewer, drawing animals in numbers to those that remain.

One downside is that high-season prices apply during the Dry season months. Crowds are also larger – in some parks, the queue of safari vehicles can take away something from your experience, and some areas of the Masai Mara can be completely overwhelmed with vehicles during the migration.

In the Dry season, June is one of my favorite months to visit. Visiting from November to February also has its devotees. At this time, migrating birds arrive, the rains rarely disrupt travel, and the country is transformed into a lovely shade of green. Most travelers avoid March to May because heavy rains are always possible and can transform safari trails into muddy bogs. That said, prices are lower and I visited once in April and was lucky to find very few other visitors (except for local visitors around Easter) and clear skies.”

Most safari days begin before sunrise, when the African wilderness is quiet and full of anticipation. After a quick coffee or tea, you head out in your safari vehicle with your driver-guide and, in some cases, a tracker, to search for wildlife during the best viewing hours of the day. You then return to the lodge or camp late in the morning for a proper sit-down breakfast, followed by a few hours of relaxation, lunch, and time to unwind during the hottest part of the day, when many animals rest in the shade.

In the afternoon, you may enjoy tea around 3:00 PM or 3:30 PM before heading back out for another exciting game drive. Can I see the Big Five, & Birds Species in Kenya? The Big Five animals are the standouts of any Africa safari, the wildlife that for many define what a journey to the savannah is all about. We’re talking about the iconic wild animals – the lion, leopard, African buffalo, elephant, and rhinoceros – which you can see on the best safaris in East Africa.

The term “Big Five” goes back to the colonial days of game hunters and the difficulty of pursuing on foot and ultimately killing these beautiful animals. Fortunately, our species for the most part has abandoned the legal pursuit of vanquishing these gifts of nature, and instead, we now try to protect and preserve them.

Everybody who goes on an Africa safari hopes to see the Big Five in the flesh. And Kenya is undoubtedly one of the very best countries to make this dream come true. Many of its parks support at least four, and in some cases all five, of these eagerly sought creatures. Furthermore, you can greatly increase your chance of seeing all of the Big Five by matching two or more safari destinations with complementary strengths.

Lions: It would be difficult to go on safari without expectations of seeing the ‘king of the jungle’. Fortunately, several of Kenya’s parks feature multiple prides of lions. The Tsavo Parks are home to the appropriately named Tsavo lions, a fascinating sub-species whose males sport unusually short manes. But for sheer number of prides and therefore individual lions, a visit to the Masai Mara is essential. The park and its surrounding conservancies offer the best chance to watch these great predators on the prowl, especially during the season (July – October) of the Great Migration.

Leopards: Sleek and mysterious, the leopard is a night hunter, on the prowl between sunset and sunrise. From its natural perch high on a tree branch, this graceful predator scans the horizon for its usual prey of grazers – antelope, gazelle, zebra, or wildebeest.

Leopards are found in the Masai Mara, Amboseli, the Tsavo Parks but also in smaller reserves like Nakuru National Park and Ol Pejeta Conservancy. At Ol Pejeta you can go on nighttime safaris which increases your chances of a sighting.

Elephants: Perhaps the most beloved of the “Big Five” and maybe all of Africa’s wildlife, the mighty elephant marches through most of Kenya’s wildlife parks. You’ll see the towering pachyderm, often in family groups parading to and from their watering holes. An herbivore, the elephant is often spotted tearing off great branches of leaves on which to feed.

Samburu Park boasts an elephant population of almost 1000 of the great creatures. However, Amboseli, a smaller park has such a huge density of elephants that you are guaranteed to see them… and probably many times during your visit.

Buffalos: This fierce animal is the only one of the “Big Five” that isn’t endangered or considered vulnerable. Amongst hunters, it was always considered the most dangerous as it was easily provoked and would charge its pursuers, especially when wounded. You’ll find this distinctive and sometimes ornery horned bovid in almost all of Kenya’s wildlife parks.

Rhinos: With its huge hulking body and unique set of horns rising from its nasal bridge, the big rhino is a special treat to witness. Despite their great form and threatening appearance, rhinos are quite shy, and finding them in the wild is not always easy.

Of the “Big Five”, the rhino is the most endangered and so special sanctuaries have been created for their protection from poachers and to nurture back the dwindling population. You’ll find rhinos in most of the wildlife parks but especially in the sanctuaries harbored at Nairobi National Park, Ol Pejeta, and Lake Nakuru.

Do I need a Visa to enter Kenya? Yes, a visa is required if you plan to travel to Kenya, except citizens from countries who are exempted. You will also need a passport with 6 months’ validity and at least 2 blank pages to enter the country. Kenyan entry visas are exclusively issued electronically, with passengers required to obtain their E-visa before departure.

What is the Great Migration (Wildebeest Migration)? The Great Migration also known as the Wildebeest Migration is the mass movement of over a million plus animals including wildebeest, antelope, Zebra and the Big Cats such as Lion from Serengeti into Masai Mara. The migration is actually a continuous yearlong clockwise movement encompassing Serengeti in Tanzania and Masai Mara in Kenya, influenced by a number of factors including weather, pasture and mating birthing cycles.

What safari vehicle types do you use on your tours? Our standard safari travel & game viewing drive vehicle is a custom designed 4 x 4 Land Cruiser Jeep with pop up top for ease of photography during game viewing drives and sightseeing. The vehicle sits a maximum of 6 persons for guarantee window seats and access to the pop up top.

Our 4×4 safari Jeeps are fitted with long range radios for easy communication, cooler boxes, and first aid kits. This is on top of the other extras in Jeep.

What Kind of Clothes Should I Pack For My Trip to Kenya?

Kenya is quite a conservative country. In many parts of the country, shorts and short skirts are frowned upon, so always make sure that you do not flash too much skin. Due to the climate, cotton shirts, sweaters, t-shirts and slacks are great clothing items that should be brought along.

Nights are often chilly, so bring along fleece tops, a windbreaker and jacket. Socks and good walking shoes are essential. Pale colours such as tan or olive are best, but camouflage clothes are illegal in many parts of Africa, so steer clear. A sun hat with a large brim, sunglasses and a sunscreen are important. Travel light and bring along clothes that do not take hours to dry and fits easily into your bags.

How to Get There? Kenya’s main airport is Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), located 15km/9mi southeast of the capital city Nairobi. Kenya’s second international airport is Moi International Airport (MBA), located 9km/6mi west of Mombasa, but aside from flights to Zanzibar, this is primarily used for domestic and charter flights.

From Nairobi or Mombasa, you can fly or drive between parks and reserves, or opt to do a bit of both. Most (but not all) domestic flights out of Nairobi depart from Wilson Airport (WIL), 6km/4mi south of the city.

Whichever mode you choose for travel, in most cases the local tour operator will arrange pickup at the airport and all further transportation as part of the safari package.

No visa is required. Instead, all visitors must have an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA).
