Lake Bunyonyi

About Lake Bunyonyi
Lake Bunyonyi “place of many little birds” one of the most stunning places in the Pearl of Africa. And it’s found in the South-Western Uganda between Kisoro and Kabale district. Believed to be formed 10000 years ago. Formed as a result of magma that flew from the erupted mount Virunga blocking the water flowing from River Ndeg. Hence creating a dam which later on became a lake. The deepest lake in Uganda with 900 meters/3000 feet, making it the second-deepest lake in Africa after Lake Tanganyika in Tanzania. It covers an area of 60km.sq. Lake Bunyonyi is often tagged as one of the most beautiful lakes in Africa and for good reason. Its crystal-clear waters, surrounded by terraced hills and dotted with lush, verdant islands. Create a scene straight out of a postcard.
Islands of Lake Bunyonyi
The Lake has 29 different Islands including the Punishment Island, Bwama Island, Bushara Island, Kyahugye Island, Bacuranuka Island. Among others each Island has a unique story. It provides breathtaking atmosphere to tourists. To relax from especially after a gorilla tour in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park. And also a clear view of the Virunga Mountains. The lake also offers relaxation moments to the tourists especially those who come for birding safaris. Since this Lake has a variety of over 200 bird species such as grey crowned cranes, white tailed blue monard, herons, African Harrier Hawk, egrets, slender-billed baglafetch, levillant cuckoo, cardinal woodpecker among others which are so attractive to the tourists.
